Mathias M. Thielen

Matt Thielen was born on July 8, 1896, in Exira, IA to Peter and Susanna (Clemen) Thielen. Peter was an immigrant from Germany. The family moved to a farm near Templeton between Matt’s birth and the 1900 census. He registered for the military draft in June, 1918, in Dunlap, IA (Harrison County) and indicated he was working there for his parents.
Matt was inducted into the US Army on September 5, 1918, and was sent to Camp Dodge near Des Moines for initial training. He was subsequently assigned to Company 45, 12th Battalion of the 163rd Depot Brigade. The 163rd Depot Brigade was the organization which operated Camp Dodge to recruit and train incoming soldiers.
On October 13, 1918, Matt died of pneumonia related to the Spanish flu epidemic at age 22. According to the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, Matt was one of approximately 50 soldiers to succumb to the flu at Camp Dodge during the war. He was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.
